The Organization
Nampak (National Amalgamated Packaging) is a South African company based in Johannesburg, South Africa that specializes in the manufacturing and design of packaging. Nampak is the largest diversified packaging company in Africa. The company produces packaging in glass, paper, metals, and plastic.
Problem
The goal of the Culture development project was to become the packaging leader in Africa, to achieve World Benchmarked Performance, and have the company be known as “The place to be” Employer of Choice for employees.

The Grid Culture Transformation took 5 years over several stages. 800 people in three factories participated: the Managing Director and 18 Senior Managers, 130 Managers and Supervisors, and 650 factory workers.

Nampak was named Business of the Year in 2011. They were the first African Company to achieve the Oliver Wight Class (A) award. They also won numerous international awards for products and services. They established a strong risk control program, instituted integrated business planning, had customers signing supply agreements, and achieved excellent financial returns. As they set out, they became “The place to be”, the Employer of Choice. Executive Director Robin Moore said that “The Grid approach has been the glue that binds them all together.”
