Activity Focus

The objective of critique is to discuss and measure behavior and results against established standards for achievement. Critique occurs when people involved in an activity discuss the quality of their effort. Discussion can reflect on past activities, plan for future activities, or check progress on current activities. Critique also includes setting criteria for ongoing comparison and revision.

Team-wide critique is most effective when people involved share an understanding about what they are critiquing rather than simply asking general questions like “What did you think of the results? The following activity establishes this by focusing on three dimentions of teamwork: Decision Making, Advocacy, and Critique and Feedback.

Activity Goals

̤Examine how well the team used its resources available from each member while completing Activity .

Experience the value of using critique to study how behaviors impact results and shape group norms.

Identify and develop strategies for overcoming problems and implementing change in future Activity.

Increase personal awareness and confidence regarding the relationships and the developing team culture.

Step 1: Individual Assessment

Complete your personal critique of the team culture and how members worked in completing the 35-question True/False Test in Activity 1.

The following three dimensions of teamwork on pages 58-60 provide a starting point for defining what teams are critiquing. In the space provided, first write examples of what took place during your team discussion. Be specific so other team members can relate to your evaluations.

Using your examples as a guide, assign 100 points across the seven statements for each topic. Assign the highest amount of points to statements more like your team’s behavior, and lesser or no points to statements that are least like your team’s behavior. If you believe one of the choices describes a large part of the discussion, you might give it 35 or 40 points. If another choice describes action you saw very little of or not at all you might give it a 5 or 0. This distribution may be any combination of points that adds up to 100. Complete your point distribution in the Individual column on the left. Base your assessments on the specific examples you listed. A sample is provided on the following page.
