Group Dynamics in Action

Time 1

Norms start through Convergence when a change is introduced to a team.

Few social pressures are more important for understanding change than the human tendency to converge around a common idea in a group setting.

Time 2

Norms take shape through Cohesion as team members congregate around common ideas about how to deal with the change.

Cohesion is one of the most significant forces for social organisation.

Time 3

Finally, team members Conform around the new group norm, often without thinking about why.

Conformity enforces the norm by creating pressure, often subtly, to ‘fall in line’ with the group in reinforcing the norm.

When first introduced (shown in Time 1), people are experimenting with different approaches, as seen in the various colored arrows.

In Time 2 people begin to converge around a new performance norm.

By Time 3 members have conformed to the new performance norm, represented by the aligned blue circles.

Whether these powerful process and the totally predictable end-result norms are sound or unsound, however, completely depends on how well the process is understood and managed.
